Those of us living in British Commonwealth countries celebrate Boxing Day the day after Christmas. It was originally a day meant for giving gifts to the poor and unfortunate but throughout the Commonwealth it was frequently the equivalent to the US Black Friday - sales, sales, sales! For many of us Boxing Day is just another day off. Or is it? So I'm curious: what would your ideal Boxing Day be? Just a chance to recuperate from Christmas Day? Should it be a day to put your worries and fears in a box? Or something else?
For us it's a day off: a chance to regroup, enjoy each other's company, enjoy reflecting on Christmas fun, and snoozing off the excesses of a turkey dinner on the sofa under a blanket and watching 'Paddington 2'. I've only read this post the day AFTER Boxing Day, which is also a bank holiday over here (because Christmas Day fell on a weekend day) - so it's Boxing Day 2: The Sequel. It's been a day of family, of walks, of good food..... and of getting home after our first family Christmas NOT on Zoom since 2019, and our first family Christmas with all of us together at my parents' home since 2016. It's been absolutely marvellous. 🎄
Normally it’s “recovery day” for us, when we slow down after all the hustle and bustle, visit family & friends, etc. This year, it’s been a COVID Xmas, so it’s still recovery day, but in a different way.
Really like the idea of boxing up fears and worries, Mark. Since we in the US don’t celebrate Boxing Day, I’m making it a new tradition.
Lovely post, Mark - thank you!

It’s either an extra day off work for me, or an extra shift to pick up. But I’m off today. 😸
Cleaning the house and laundry. Nice to sleep in though.

Some years it's for accommodating other events and family gatherings. The way the calendar worked out this year, it's overtime pay on a stat holiday.
We spend it with family; it’s a way to spread out the festivities.
It's an extra holiday and I love it.
