I really enjoyed this post. How is it that there are zero comments here? I'm baffled, because it's though-provoking to no end. I haven't seem Truman Show in forever, but I am now curious to rewatch it. I have a fascination with the same subject: the things that lie beneath, behind, and out of sight. Your writing brought up a free association of parallel ideas. I hope you don't mind that I share!

- Perennial flowers bloom annually only thanks to the rhizome beneath the soil that persists throughout the seasons.

- Our automatic mind operates in the background allowing us to drive while eating or talking.

- People just like buildings have fronts or facades; we wear any variety of masks (or adopt one or more personas) depending upon the circumstance, context, or people we are with.

I'm also reminded by your post of "blind spots", specifically the things we don't know about ourselves (or maybe our reality, relationships, opportunities, challenges, etc) that other people do know or notice. Someone once told me the following about blind spots: it's like when a cat hides under a blanket thinking he's invisible; that no one can see him. Yet, his tail is in plain view, flicking about outside of the blanket, for all to see. While this is definitely a different take on the idea of there being a "behind the scenes" or an "underbelly", I think there's a connection here to what you wrote. That is, there are things we want to hide about ourselves (and go to great lengths to do so), but in the end they are often in plain view to others. And sometimes, that which we don't even know about ourselves (e.g. our behaviors, positive or negative or between) and/or our reality (e.g. an unhealthy relationship, an unworkable life/family balance, etc) is only visible to others.

Ultimately, your post is fantastic and thought provoking and way more people should be reading it! And, I look forward to reading more.
