Other media in New Brunswick (CANADA)
In which we list a number of online and print publications that are not owned or run by Postmedia
The province of New Brunswick is well-known for media concentration, with the Irving group of companies (and now Postmedia) owning all of the English language daily newspapers and other media outlets in NB. I’m not here to debate the pros or cons of this situation. Instead, I’m going to focus on other media in New Brunswick which are not owned by either group of companies. Please also note the footnotes, including some disclosures.1
Hopefully you’ll check out one of more of these publications to help support other media in NB! Let me know if I’m missing any and I’ll add them to the list!

NB Media Co-op: As per its website: our flagship online publication is called the NB Media Co-op, hosted on a secure server in Canada. We also publish a monthly broadsheet called The Brief. As an independent media outlet, we publish stories not covered in the mainstream commercial media. Our stories take a social justice lens and include the perspectives of workers, students, indigenous peoples, and other marginalized groups.
The Miramichi Reader: Subtitled Canada’s Best-Regarded Source For The Finest In New Literary Releases, this publication (I believe it’s online only) features a series of in-depth book reviews from its roster of interviewers. They also have a podcast.
River Valley Sun/AgelessNB: headquartered in Woodstock2, these two publications are the flagship publications of this local publisher. River Valley Sun is a free monthly newspaper, while AgelessNB is a quarterly magazine. River Valley Sun also maintains an active Facebook presence.
Acadie Nouvelle: New Brunswick’s French language newspaper, also includes an online presence.3
St. Croix Courier: based in southwestern NB, in their own words: the Courier is one of the only independent reporting voices in New Brunswick, providing a different perspective on the social, political and business developments of our province.
The New Wark Times: covering local news in Sackville, NB and more.
Grid City Magazine: focusing on Fredericton’s vibrant arts and culture communities.
The Manatee: satire originating in NB but now lampooning all Atlantic Canada provinces.
Student/university media:
The Courant - Université de Moncton - Campus de Shippegan
The Aquinian - Saint Thomas University
The Brunswickan - UNB Fredericton
The Baron - UNB Saint John (see their Facebook presence)
The NB Government also maintains a list of media in the province.
Huddle was recently removed as it is actually owned by an Irving company subsidiary.
I have a family member who works for the River Valley Sun for the past two summers and I have also published an article in AgelessNB.
Printed (apparently) by Irving/Postmedia but I don’t believe it’s owned by Postmedia.
Huddle is owned by Acadia Broadcasting which is owned by John Irving.
Thanks for the mention of The Miramichi Reader, Mark. Yes, we are online only and we have a weekly newsletter sent out to email subscribers.
