How About These Links #16 - Sept. 23/22
Links, news and more with the help of the H.A.T. scouts
It’s the 16th edition of the link posts at How About This! Two to the power of four! No idea if this is significant or not!
I spent much of this week on a business trip and I was quite shocked to learn that the rest of the world is still there (I haven’t left my home province since, well, you know.)
Also, I’m about due for some kind of notebook review, I’ve been sampling some different brands lately and I have thoughts to share. Definitely soon.
Now let’s see what the H.A.T. Scouts have found!
Mike Snowden (Everything Is Amazing) wrote a wonderful piece talking about the Knowledge (aka the information London’s black cab drivers need to navigate the city and deliver passengers safely in that sprawling metropolis). I’ve read about the Knowledge before but Mike takes us to an unexpected destination or two in his piece. I’ve joked recently that Mike possesses the Substack Knowledge - he’s got it down pat.
Lincoln Michel (Counter Craft) takes on the subject of genre (particularly science fiction and fantasy), managing to include both Joyce Carol Oates and Ted Chiang, so you know there will be some thoughtful ideas AND some GD drama.
Andrew Liptak (Transfer Orbit) reminisces about SF cult favorite TV show Firefly and what he thinks of it today, particularly in the face of allegations about creator Joss Whedon’s terrible (to put it mildly) behaviour.
The STSC Omnibus #34 - always great variety with this group, somehow they let me stick around but I am a paying member so.
Interview with Alyson Hasson this week plus I shared an interview with a famous, popular writer, one that I was not involved with. Not at all.
I wrote a short post referencing the creation of the Dungeons & Dragons game and how it was originally valued as a $300 idea in the early 1970s (spoiler: way, way undervalued as it turned out), with a suggestion about how it’s impossible to know the long term value of an idea.
No cross-promotions this week but I am planning a newsletter exchange next week with the fine folks at The Metropolitan (a wonderful Substack focusing on the memories of Gen X people growing up in Britain). I’ll be publishing one of their essays, they’ll be publishing one of mine!
RELEASE
Time to release the H.A.T. Scouts for another week! And remember, it’s always better to be a H.A.T.T.E.R. than a hater.
My goodness! Sowden’s Knowledge article! Bookmarking it and planning to read it many more times. Thanks for recommending!
Really enjoyed the genre and Firefly posts, thanks for that!
