SOME NEW THINGS
It’s the 13th edition of the link posts at How About This! Four notes to start:
Cross Promotion - mentioning The Sample and Refind this week.
The week of Sept. 5 - 9 is will be another mega interviews week! Four interviews: two Atlantic Canadian interviews, two Creator Profiles! I will also publish How About These Links that week.
Subscriptions and newsletter sections: another reminder: there are currently four sections to the newsletter: How About This (the “main” newsletter), Atlantic Canada Mondays, The Curious Realizer and Dispatches from the Imagination. However, I am currently publishing everything by E-mail under the main How About This newsletter. This means that if you only subscribe to Atlantic Canada Mondays, The Curious Realizer or Dispatches from the Imagination you probably won’t receive any E-mails. You need to stay subscribed to How About This to keep getting E-mails. I *may* start using the extra sections as independent newsletters but I have no plans to do this in the short term. All this to say: you don’t need to do or change anything at the moment! If I change my publication strategy I will give you plenty of advance notice about it!
A small request: if you also have a Substack newsletter and you’re enjoying How About This, please consider using the Recommendation feature to Recommend this newsletter if you haven’t already. I would greatly appreciate your support!
The H.A.T. Scouts are getting really anxious, let’s see what they’ve found.
CROSS-PROMOTION(S)
If you have a newsletter and want to expose your work to more people, consider signing up for The Sample (referral link) to join a network of other publishers who use The Sample. It’s also another good way to find newsletters tailored to your interests and quickly subscribe to them.
Refind (referral link) is a service that can E-mail you a recommended list of 7 links to posts, articles and websites several times per week (even daily). You can provide feedback on the links on how good they are which should improve your experience over time. There’s also a mobile app if you prefer to use that. Worth checking out if you want to find more interesting material to read!
OVER THERE (found elsewhere)
Alison took a week off and shares her incisive thoughts about vacations and how it can be hard to take them.
Bryn tells us about her #SciArtSeptember challenge - looks like a lot of fun and good learnings in store.
Summer explains 9 myths about nonfiction trade publishing (this is from April but I’ve only discovered this week and think it’s worth your time to read)
Dave Karpf writes about the A.I. hype-train and it’s a great read - I spent a little bit of time thinking about artificial intelligence like anyone who has watched the Terminator movies and I think he highlights some important points.
Tomas at Uncharted Territories published this absolutely fascinating article about how climate change and weather are affecting China and Pakistan differently this year.
Craig is going on (brilliantly) about social media again
Oldster Magazine is a year old - filled with always interesting inteviews with people sharing their experiences with ageing (many of them are not that old!)
Frank spills some secrets about killing a creative block
BACK HERE (the past week’s posts)
Really thoughtful interviews with The Practical Escapist, Leon Conrad, MarkFyve and Sal Sawler - my thanks to them for making themselves available and providing great answers!
*PREENS*
This is a preen-free issue, alas, but some ideas are in the works! BUT, I bought a fountain pen and I’m quite happy with this!
RELEASE
Watch for a special post tomorrow including my month 4 progress report!
Time to release the H.A.T. Scouts for another week! And remember, it’s always better to be a H.A.T.T.E.R. than a hater.
Loving the new header images!
Thanks for the tip about Bryn's newsletter!
